MOORDOWN BOWLING CLUB |
INTRODUCTION |
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT
A very warm welcome to the Moordown Bowling Club website from the 2009 President
George Webb
Moordown Bowling Club began in 1928 when the ladies club was formed and became a founder member of what was then the EWBA. (As a matter of interest the first EWBA representative game was played at this club on 25th August 1932). Soon after, the men’s club was established and both “sections” continued to operate as separate entities within the club until 2000 when we came together and have since enjoyed nine years of tremendous progress.
We have a great history and tradition but must continue to look to the future - we are only the temporary custodians of a great bowling club.
Although our club is not the biggest in the town we have a proud reputation of being both a friendly and happy place to bowl at all levels on a green now regarded as one of the best in the town.
Like the majority of clubs in Bournemouth we are now self-managed, with a very hard working and proactive Management Committee, who also have influential input, not only at the club, but also across the town as well.
We have 3 teams in the B&D BA Men’s League, 2 in the B&DWBA Ladies League and now 4 teams in the Tuesday Triples League; other competitive aspects include the various club competitions, which are so well supported, as are the regular Friday afternoon “Spoons”
We have our Club Night every Monday & are fortunate to have a number of nationally qualified level 2 & 3 coaches always happy to help members “old” & “new”.
Over the last few years we have been honoured to host many matches in the Bournemouth “Bowlaway” Open and Moordown has now become the “home” of the ladies singles and pairs competitions up to and including the finals. I know from many letters received from the ladies that they always look forward to coming to Moordown where they are made so welcome - (some say, it’s like “coming home”).
For all our success we must not be complacent and are always looking for ways to improve our facilities and abilities. New members are always welcome whether they are experienced bowlers or absolute novices, and at the beginning of each season, and because of the coaches we have, we offer free coaching to those who are anxious to “Give bowls a try”
Bournemouth is a town frequented by many touring sides each summer and in 2009 Moordown is pleased to be able to be host to at least 17 visiting “clubs” from various parts of the country. Our friendly welcome - (and Bar Facilities) - are obviously becoming well known and appreciated!
Within the club we maintain a good and varied Social Programme, both throughout the season and during the winter months and our Secretary issues a valued Newsletter at regular intervals to keep members up to date with all that’s going on at the club.
As you can see we aim to progress and if you are interested either in taking up the sport or bringing a touring side to the town …Moordown is the club to contact.
Thank you for visiting our website and may I take the opportunity to wish you another happy and successful year of bowling.
My very best wishes
George Webb (President)
